When these start to go bad, the plunger get harder to move, in turn, that puts undo stress on the heater control assembly (and of course, that is not available any longer)… They also tend to rot away sine the guy before you ran straight water or never thought about changing the coolant. They can also build up a ton of corrosion UNDER the heater hose connections not allowing a proper seal.

When your dashboard heater control is hard to move (or doesn’t move at all) this could be your issue. Over the years the valve starts fails due to rust and corrosion. When this valve starts to stick, it puts excess strain on the PLASTIC heater controls in your dash. You don’t want to replace those. It’s ugly, trust me, it’s no fun. OE part.
